What is a PAR-Q and what does it stand for?
Par-q is physical activity readiness questionaire and is a self screening tool that can be used by anyone who is planning to start an exercise or training routine
Why to warm-up?
Prepare muscles
Prepare joints
Prepare the mind
Prevent risk of injury
Prevent the ligament
Prepare the cardiovascular system
Phases of warm-up
Cardiovascular or pulse raiser
Dynamic stretches
Sport specific
Cardiovascular phase
Gradually raise the heart rate towards the working heart rate
Static stretches
Easy, on the spot stretching without straining
Dynamic stretches
Stretches that use movements specific to a sport, gradually increasing the speed
Sport sepcific warm-up examples
Sprint starts
Parctice throws
Take off for pole vaulters
throwing and catching for cricket
Catching crosses for goalkeeper
Cool down stages
-Jogging can be used to return the heart-rate gradually to its resting level for 5-10 mins
- 10-15 mins of stretching. Static stretches are prefered in a cool-down and are held 30-35 secs.
