Monosaccharides- fructose, galactose, glucose
Disaccharides- lactose, maltose, sucrose
Glycogen- glucose polymer

Mouth- amylase

Describe the difference between hetrokinase & glucokinase
Glucokinase phosphylates glucose in the liver,
Hetrokinase in other cells e.g. muscle
Describe glycogen synthesis
Taking glucose to glycogen

Occurs during FED state/ absorption
Triggers insulin
GLUT 2/3 to take Glu into cell converted to glu-6-p then glycogen
Describe glycogen degradation
Cutting up glycogen polymer into glucose
Occurs in liver/ muscle cells
When body is in fasting state

what enzymes are involved in glycogenolysis
Glycogen phosphylase breaks A- 1,4 glycosidic bonds and adds phosphates forming Glu-1-P
Branching enzyme forms free glucose
Explain function of Glucose-6- phosphatase
Only works in endoplasmic rectillium of liver cells
Makes free glucose from Glu-6- p
T2 transports out E.R. Into cell
Explain glycolysis
Oxidising glucose into (2) pyruvate, 2 net ATP & 2 NADH
Occurs in the cytoplasm
What can pyruvate be converted into
Acetyl CoA (aerobic), Lactic acid (anaerobic)
Explain GLUT receptors
GLUT1- RBCs, foetus, blood brain barrier
GLUT2- kidneys, liver, pancreas, GI
GLUT3- placenta, neurons, kidneys
GLUT4- muscle, fat/adipose ( insulin dependant)

Explain gluconegenesis (metabolism)
Forming new glucose not from carbs.
Occurs in the liver/ kidneys
USes glucagon/ cortisol hormone, lactic acid, glycerol, amino acids
What is the fate of lactase
Circulating- go to liver to be reconverted into gluconegogenesis/glyconeogenesis
Oxidation to ATP, CO2 and H2O
Explain lactate dehydrogenase
Enzyme that converts pyruvate to lactate
Converts NAD+ to NADH
Involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis
Explain pyruvate dehydrogenase
Converts pyruvate to acetyl CoA
Converts NAD+ to NADH
What is fructose used for
Metabolised in the liver and used for fat synthesis
