Q

What is the relationship between body size and metabolic rate?

A

For endotherms, as body mass increases, metabolic rate decreases. SA:V decreases as body size increases. Larger endotherms struggle with losing heat and are better at keeping heat.
Smaller endotherms have increase SA:V, lose lots of heat thus need a higher metabolism

Q

What is the relationship between activity rate and metabolic rate?

A

The more active animals are the higher the metabolic rate because they need more energy. As they build more heat inside of them due to more ATP production, the body starts procedures to cool the body down.

Q

Relationship between environmental temperature and metabolic rate for endotherms

A

As environmental temperature decreases, metabolic rate increases. It also increases when temperature decreases because, it is working hard to get rid of the energy

Q

What are the disadvantages of ectotherms?

A

They can’t stay in environments that are too hot or cold because it would hurt them. They have to do behavioral shifts to go to maintain their metabolism. While, endotherms can use cell Respiration and behavior to meet their needs
