What is a gsl medicine

A

General sales list medicine, its a medicine that is self selection that is sold in a pharmacy with a qualified pharmacist or anywhere that can be excluded from the pubic

What is a P medicine

A

A pharmacy only medicine, a medicine that can only be sold in a pharmacy with a qualified responsible pharmacist present. Cannot be accessible to the public

What is a POM medicine

A

A prescription only medicine, these are meds that can only be given at a registered pharmacy but a qualified pharmacist with a prescription from a pharmacist.

What is an example of a medicine that falls under different classifications

A

Paracetamol and aspirin non effervescent tablets.
- 16 - 32 (1 pack) = GSL
- 32 -96 (3 packs) = P
- >100 (more than 3 packs) = POM

A

It must be dissolved to drink thus a person will reach a limit of fluid intake before harmful effects occur

What are regulation involved with codeine and dihydrocodeine

A

It should be sold to treat moderate pain that paracetamol , ibruprofen and aspirin themselves cannot treat and should not be sold to someone displaying flu like symptoms .
It’s a P medicine that can be sold otc as a solid form however more than 32 is POM.

What must a codeine/dihydrocodeine medication have on the information leaflet

A

Can cause addiction and headaches and shouldn’t be used for more than 3 days.
Should also state symptoms of addiction

Regulation with pseudoephedrine/ ephedrine

A

It’s used as a decongestant (clear airways). However only 720mg of pseudoephedrine can be sold and 180mg of ephedrine can be sold.
This is because it can be used in the production methylamphetamine
