What is a PSD

A

Patient specific direction.
A written directions from a doctor/ dentist or a NMP to supply/ administer a medicine to a patient having examined that patient

What is a PGD

A

A patient group direction.
Written direction that allows the supply and administration of a specific medicine by a named authorised health professional to a specific group of patients with a health condition requiring treatment.
Pharmacist must be involved in the process. And the administration/ supply cannot be delegated, the specific HCP must be involved

A

When a HCP is restricted in the medication they can prescribe and so have a pharmacist prescribe them that medicine.

A

Give the patient a signed patient order to take to a registered pharmacist at a pharmacy. However the POM can only be a POM from a list of medications related to their profession

The signed patient order does not require prescription format however must instruct the patient how to safely use the medicine and directions
The medicine should have a patient info leaflet and be recorder in the POM register

  • must have a suitable responsible pharmacist and ensure that there is suitable procurements, storage and distribution of drugsw

Who is exempted from having a WDA when wholesaling medicines

A

If a pharmacy send drugs from to another however both are the same legal entity, however must be for non profit reasons and quantity must be small and it must be occasionally

How is the Serious Shortage Protocol of medications combating the shortages

A

Allows:
- different strength, form or quantity of the medication prescribed to be given
- allows different POM to the one prescribed to be given, e.g. the generic version could be given as opposed to the branded one prescribed

A
  • Pharmacist uses professional judgement to determine the change is okay .
  • Patient also needs to agree for the months supply
