What is the criteria for the supply of an emergency supply to a HCP

A
  • a relevant prescriber, excluding HCP from the EEA and Switzerland
  • the event must be an actual emergency
  • a written prescription must be written within 72 hours of supply
  • the medicine can only be prescribed in the directions given by the prescriber
  • no CDs except phenobarbital for epilepsy

What must be done after supplying an emergency supply to a HCP

A

An entry into the POM register on the day or if not possible the day after:
- what medicine, the strength, form and quantity
- the date the POM was supplied
- the name and address of the prescriber
- the name and address if the patient and age if under 12
- the date the prescription was received
- the date on the prescription

Criteria when supplying an emergency supply to a patient

A
  • interview patient where appropriate e.g. not if a child or mentally unable
  • can only be given if immediate need and a prescription would delay would have a negative impact
  • the POM requested have been previously used by the patient in treatment and is UK MA
  • the pharmacist must be able to give suitable dosage, forms, directions and quantity
  • no schedule 1,2,3 CDs except phenobarbital.
    Periods
  • schedule 4,5 CDs 5 days treatment
  • POMs 30 days max
  • oral contraception, full cycle
  • ## antibiotics - smallest cycle available for full treatment

- the date the POM was supplied
- the name of med, strength, form and quantity
- the name and address of the patient
- why the POM was given to the patient without a prescription
