What is state anxiety?

A

State anxiety a temporary mood state that is an emotional response to a ‘threat’. Once said ‘threat’ has disappeared, the anxiety has gone.

What is the multidimensional theory of anxiety?

A

The multidimensional theory suggest that somatic and cognitive anxiety affect performance in different ways. Generally cognitive anxiety is believed to decrease performance while somatic anxiety is thought to enhance performance. However, cognitive anxiety can improve performance to motivate them more but too much can reduce performance.

What is the reversal theory?

A

The reversal theory suggests that it is the perception of the athletes that determines performance. So if an athlete has a positive perception of anxiety, their performance will become enhanced.

A

The fight or flight response is an automatic physiological reaction to an event that is percieved as stressful or frightening. This response is caused by an increase in cortisol and adrenaline levels.
