Vasectomy and castration Flashcards
List 2 bloodless castration methods
Burdizzo
rubber rings
Describe how are rubber rings used for castration
rubber ring stretched over the whole scrotum and released - ensuring both testicles are below the ring
blood flow is cut and the testicles and scrotum atrophy and eventually slough
Describe how burdizzos are used for castration
burdizzo crushes the spermatic cord - prevents blood flow into the testicular artery, testicle atrophies but the scrotum remains
in calves/lambs, when does rubber ringing have to be done by
within 7 days of birth
at what point is it required for vet to castrate a calf
more than 2 months of age
at what point is it required for vet to castrate a lamb
more than 3 months of age
how would we castrate a calf or bull surgically
via an open technique
what anaesthetic do we give to bulls when castrating
subcut LA under the skin and 1-5ml in both spermatic cords
provide post op NSAIDs
Describe calf castration- twisting method
standard skin prep
make incision through the scrotal skin and vaginal tunic
separate vaginal tunic from the testicle by tearing the ligament
pull testis down and twist the cord repeatedly occasionally stretching until it snaps - or you can use an emasculator to cut the testicle off
if you have a cryptorchid animal, what castration method do you need to use
surgical
what age can the burdizzo technique be used up to
2 months
what is a vasectomy
bilateral surgical removal of a part of the vas deferens
what is the effect of manipulating a ewes oestrus cycle by presenting her to a ram
2 week advancement by using a teaser ram
