What is an Accident?
An unplanned event caused by unsafe acts or unsafe conditions
Usually there is an investigation
What is an incident?
An incident is an unplanned and unwanted event which disrupts the work process and has the potential of resulting in injury, harm, or damage to persons or property
Usually no investigation
What are hazards?
A condition that has the potential to produce injury and/or property damage
What is risk?
- The probability that a hazard will be activated and produces injury or property damage.
- The quantifiable likelihood of loss or less than expected returns
- It can be two fold: frequency and severity
l. ) the frequency that a negative situation will occur
ll.) the severity of injury or damage if the hazard is activated
What is Safety?
· An everchanging condition in which one attempts to eliminate hazards or minimize the risk of injury, illness, or property damage from the hazards to which one may be exposed.
· Freedom from unacceptable risk
Why Safety? (3 Reasons)
l.) Moral/humanitarian/ethical
· to protect our most important asset, our employees
· to help create a superior employee experience
ll.) Legal
· to maintain compliance with federal, state and local
environmental, health and safety laws
lll.) Economics/Financial
· To reduce risks to the corporation
· To reduce costs to the company by reducing accidents,
injuries and illnesses, and insurance premium
What are the two types of cost?
-Direct Cost: Ex: medical costs compensation
-Indirect Cost: Ex: lost production, re-training, poor morale, OSHA fines
What are 3 overturned anti-labor laws?
- Fellow Servant Rule: employers were not liable for workplace injuries that resulted from negligence of other employees
- Contributory Negligence: if actions of employees contributed to own injuries
- Assumption of Risk: workers who accept a job assume the risks of the job and consequences of the risk
