PPE Flashcards

1
Q

What are the responsibilities of the employer when it comes to PPE?

A
  • assess the hazards of the workplace
  • Identify control and provide appropriate PPE if necessary
  • Paid by the employer
    • Cannot require workers to provide their own PPE
    • Not to pay: if intentionally lost, or damaged the PPE
  • train employees in the use care of the PPE
  • Periodically review, update, and reevaluate the effectiveness

Q

What is proper head protection?

A
  • wear hardhats, if there is any possibility of;
  • Being struck by an object falling from a higher level
  • Flying object
  • Electrical shock
  • Hardhats must comply with ANSI Z 89.1

Q

What are the classifications of head protection?

A
  • class G (general) all purpose, general helmet that provides good impact,
penetration protection, limited voltage protection – up to 2200 V
  • Class E (electric) provides the highest level of protection from high state
shock – up to 20,000 V – suited for electrical work
  • Class C (conductive) does not protect against electric conductors

A
  • white: engineers, supervisors, and managers
  • Yellow: general laborers, and earth, moving operators
  • Green: safety officers, and new workers
  • Red: fire brigades and emergency responders
  • Orange: road workers and people working around moving equipment

Q

When do you replace hard hats?

A

it is suggested to replace hardhat based on service life (based on when the hardhat was placed into service, not the manufacture date)

  • Suspension at least every 12 months
  • Shall at least every 2 to 5 years.

16
Q

What does hand protection comply with?

A
  • must be durable and resist the conditions of use
  • Gloves, should not restrict dexterity required for task
  • Employees should be educated on capabilities of equipment
17
Q

What gloves do you use to protect from cuts, burns, leather, or canvas?

A

Use metal mesh, leather or canvas

18
Q

How do you respiratory protection?

A

use ANSI 88 to assist and identification of respiratory canisters, cartridges and filters

19
Q

What do the traffic vests mean?

A

-yellow with lots of orange= traffic 50 mph and up
-yellow with little orange= traffic is 25 to 50 mph
-all orange= traffic does not exceed 25 mph

20
Q

Safety Harness requirements

A

-employers provide fall protection – ANSI Z359
-ABC of fall protection
-Harness should be properly adjusted to fit the employee
-Strap keepers
-Adjustable chest strap
-Sub pelvic strap
-Back straps
-Impact indicators

21
Q

What are the abc’s in safety harnesses?

A

Anchorage, body wear, and connectiving devices (lanyards)

22
Q

What is anchorage?

A
  • must withstand a 5000 pound static load
  • One man per Anchorage point lesson instructions for the component state
    otherwise
23
Q

What is body wear?

A
  • full body fall protection, harness
  • it functions to evenly distribute forces of fall arrest across the users,
body, and helps support the worker and suspension until they can be rescued
24
Q

What is a connecting device (lanyards)?

A
  • choose the right lanyard
  • Self-retracting lifeline (SRL)
  • Shock-absorbing lanyard
  • Fall limiter
25
Q

Rule of the thumb for safety harnesses?

A

< 18 1/2 feet – self retracting lifeline/fall limiter
> 1/2 feet – use a shock, absorbing lanyard, self retracting lifeline/fall limiter

26
Q

Eye and Face protection requirments for PPE?

A
  • all eye and face equipment must comply with ANSI Z 87.1 standards
  • Employers must provide protection when employees are exposed to any
    hazards that would injure eyes
  • ANSI compliance side shields applied to conventional glasses do not make
    them safety glasses.
27
Q

What are the hearing requirements for PPE?

A

-if you are arms length from the person talking to you, and cannot hear them, it’s time for hearing protection

-Engineering and administrative controls should be applied when feasible

28
Q

how does hearing work?

A

-the outer ear collects the sound waves
-The waves hit the eardrum, and cause it to vibrate
-The vibrations are through the ear bones to the cochlea
-Loud sounds destroy the hair cells and they stop functioning forever

29
Q

What is the permissible exposure limit for hearing?

A

90 dB, action level 85dB
