Hazard Communication Flashcards

1
Q

Why was hazcom created?

A
  • 32 million workers exposed to chemicals per day
  • 575,000 existing chemical products, and hundreds of new chemicals
    introduced per year
  • Bhopal, India tragedy in December 1984
  • states enacted own “right to know law”, but chemical MFG. wanted uniform
    law versus various state laws.
  • 1985– 1910.1200 ordered by Congress
  • 2012– global harmonization (GHS) standard added

Q

What are safety data sheets? (SDS)

A
  • in the workplace for each hazardous chemical which is used
  • OSHA requires these forms for each hazardous chemical

Q

What is the global harmonize system (GHS)? (hazcom)

A
  • barrier to international trade in chemicals
  • labor requirements differ (requiring multiple labels for the same product),
  • Hazard definitions are not consistent
  • toxicity, flammability
  • Regulatory compliance is complex and costly
  • to align with United Nations globally harmonize system implemented: classification and labeling of chemicals

16
Q

What is combustible dust? (hazcom)

A

Form as a result of manufacturing material, like wood and metal that are flammable

17
Q

What are asphyxiants? (hazcom)

A

substances that may displace oxygen, and caused rapid suffocation

18
Q

What are phyrophoric gases? (Hazcom)

A

Will ignite spontaneously at a temperature of 130°F or below

19
Q

What are the differences between GHS and NFPA/NHIS?

A

Certification and labeling

  • under GHS, hazard ratings are one- most hazardous to four- least
    hazardous
  • Under NFPA/HMIS guidelines ratings are zero – no significant risk to four (most hazardous)
  • Know which type of label you are reading
  • OSHA hopes that NFPA and HMIS adopt the GHS rating system in the near future
20
Q

What do safety data sheets contrain for each chemical? (hazcom)

A
  • Chemical, and physical properties
  • Hazards
  • Routes of entry
  • PPE
