15.17 Turboshaft Engines Flashcards
(10 cards)
What does a Turboshaft engine produce instead of thrust?
Shaft power
What are the 2 major assemblies in a Turboshaft engine?
Gas generator and power section
What is used to reduce the engine output RPM due to high rotational speeds?
Reduction gearbox
Why is a drive system fitted to Turboshaft engines?
Transfer power produced within the engine to the components it drives
What are 2 examples of where turboshaft engines are used?
APU and helicopter
What is added to a drive system to prevent one engine from driving the other?
Freewheel unit/sprag clutch
How does a freewheel unit/sprag clutch operate?
Disconnects the slower engine to prevent one engine driving the other
What does the power section consist of?
Additional turbine stages, gear reduction system and shaft output
Why is an output shaft used?
To allow the engine to drive the main rotor gearbox
What is fitted to an output shaft and why?
Universal joint. Ensures drive shaft alignment, absorbs low amplitude oscillations and opposes the engines torque reaction
