15.18 Auxillary Power Units Flashcards
(29 cards)
What are the 3 APU sections?
Power section, bleed section and accessory gearbox
What does the bleed section do?
Ensures sufficient bleed air is supplied to pneumatic system
How is bleed air suppled to the pneumatic system?
Using a load compressor or APU compressor
How is a load compressor regulated?
Can’t be switch off so air regulated by IGVs
What are the 3 components of the power section?
Turbine, combustion chamber and compressor
What 2 things does an Electrical Control Box (ECB) do?
Monitors starting parameters and controls auto shutdown
What does the power section drive?
The compressor and gearbox
What does the gearbox drive?
All APU accessories
What type of combustion chamber is found on an APU?
Annular
What does the compressor do?
Provides air for combustion
How does the fire protection system activate fire extinguishers?
Automatically
What 5 conditions cause an APU auto shutdown?
Excessive EGT, over speed, low oil pressure, high oil temperature or fire
What are the 2 APU air system sub systems?
Cooling air systems and bleed air systems
What does the cooling air system on an APU do?
Supplies air to oil cooler and APU compartment ventilation
What are the 3 tasks of the APU bleed air system?
Bleed supply, surge protection and load compressor control
When are anti surge systems installed? What position are they during flight?
On APUs without load compressors. Open during flight
What is the fastest method to shutdown the APU?
Using the fire switch
How long is APU cool-down?
0-120secs
What is the minimum altitude an APU can start during flight?
15000-17000ft
What is the maximum altitude an APU can operate during flight?
40000ft
When is the APU start sequence complete?
If speed reaches 95%
If the APU bleed valve opens the what happens to bleed load and EGT?
Both increase
What are the 3 operating modes?
Start mode, normal mode and shutdown mode
When is start mode used?
Until APU reaches 100%
