15.9 Lubricants & Fuels Flashcards
(15 cards)
What 2 things do additive packages do to increase oils performance?
Increase resistance to oxidation and thermal degradation
What are the 4 main tasks of modern jet engines?
Lubricating, cooling, cleaning and corrosion protection
What are the 2 types of engine oils?
Synthetic and mineral
What are the 3 different types of synthetic oils? Where are they used?
Type 1 - older GTEs, type 2 - modern GTEs, type 3 - special aircraft
What is viscosity?
Internal resistance of fluid against deformation
Is viscosity high/low at low temperatures?
High
What is pour point?
Lowest temperature that oil will visibly move in a 31.75mm test tube held horizontally for 5 seconds
What is flash point?
Lowest temperature that oil will give off enough vapour to flash when a flame is applied
How are oils tested?
Using the ASTM D892 foam test method
What is demulsibility?
Separation of oil from water
What is the most commonly used fuel on European jet engines?
Jet A1
What is the main requirement of turbine engine fuels?
Low freezing point and flash point low enough to provide good ignition capabilities but high as possible for Safe handling
What is the pour point of type 2 oils?
-57 degrees
What is the density of jet A1 and A fuel?
0.81kg/ltr
What can anti ice additives prevent?
Bacterial growth
