Blood Plasma, Haematology (physiology) Flashcards
Three components of the blood
Plasma (makes up 55% of the blood)
Buffy coat (<1%, consist of platelets and WBC)
Erythrocytes (makes up 45% of the blood)
What are the constituents of blood plasma? (5)
Proteins
Nonprotein nitrogenous substances
Electrolytes
Respiratory gases
Organic nutrients
What are the three groups of plasma proteins?
Albumin (60% of total plasma proteins)
Globulins (36% of total plasma proteins)
Fibrinogen (4% of total plasma proteins)
Name the protein that haemoglobin binds to
Haptoglobin
Functions of plasma proteins include: (5)
-Role as reserve proteins.
-Role for coagulation of blood.
-Transportation of mechanisms.
-Maintenance of osmotic pressure in blood.
-Role in viscosity of blood.
What are the inorganic ions found in blood? (6)
-Potassium
-Sodium
-Calcium
-Phosphate
-Hydrogen carbonate
-Chloride
What is an acute plasma protein (APP)?
Any protein whose concentration increases by 25% or more during certain inflammatory disorders.
What are examples of APP? (4)
-Fibrinogen
-C-reactive protein
-Serum amyloid A
-alpha 1-acid glycopreotein
C-reactive protein release is triggered by?
-Infection, trauma and surgery.
What causes the ff:
1. Moderate changes in CRP
2. Small changes in CRP
- Strenuous exercise, childbirth and heat stroke.
- Psychological stress and several psychiatric illnesses.
