What is a chronic disease?
It is a health condition that lasts more than a year and it has functional restrictions or requires ongoing monitoring or treatment.
For how long should an adult (18 yrs and above) be physically active?
For 150 minutes per week.
What are the effects of physical inactivity? (3)
-Shortens health span
-Speeds up the losses of cardiovascular and strength fitness.
-Lowers the age for the first onset of a chronic disease.
What are the risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCD)? (6)
-Diabetes, smoking, hypertension, obesity, phyiscal inactivity, hyperlipidaemia
What is the movement which promotes exercising?
Exercise is medicine (EIM)
What are the three barriers towards EIM? (3)
-It is easier to prescribe a pill.
-It is time consuming to advice patients on their lifestyle.
-Exercise management is not funded by medical aid/ government.
What role do health care practitioners have in the health care team (EIM)? (3)
-Assessing the safety of the exercise for patient.
-Prescribing exercise
-Navigation around the barriers to exercise the patient may have.
Which exercises should any patient be able to do? (5)
-6 to 8m gait.
-8 sit-to-stand repetitions in 30s
-8 arm curls with min 4kg weight.
-Going up 10 steps (stairs) in under 30s.
-Chair sit and reach toes on both sides.
