What are performance enhancing drugs?
A substance that can be taken in variety of ways to produce expected and welcome physical and/or psychological effects.
Can increase level of performance, but can cause some unpleasant side affects
Why do people take performance enhancing drugs?
-improve performance
-encouraged to take them by coaches or athletes
-reward of winning
-pressure
What are anabolic steroids?
Drugs that mimic male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone and muscle growth and recover more quickly
Benefits of anabolic steroids
Increase muscle mass and develop bone growth, increasing strength while at same time allowing athlete to train harder and recover quicker
Aide affects of anabolic steroids
Increased risk of muscle injury, increase risk of heart attacks and strokes, high blood pressure and even death
What are beta blocker?
Drugs that are used to control the heart rate and have a calming and relaxing effect
Benefits of beta blockers
Can help tragets sports where steadiness and precision are required, because they reduce heart rate
Side affects of beta blaocker?
Nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness, depression, insomnia and nightmares
What are Narcotics and analgesics?
Narcotics are drugs that affect mood or behaviour, including drowsiness and relieving pain.
Analgesics- pain relief
Benefits of narcotics and alagesics
Depressing central nervous system and give relief from painful injuries
Side affects of narcotics and analgesics
Loss of coordination, loss of balance, loss of concentration and emotional effects
What are diuretics?
Drugs that can elevate the rate of urine production
Benefits of diuretics
Can help performers who need to lose weight. May also be used to reduce the concentration of any other banned substance that may be present in urine.
Side affects of diuretics
Dehydration, dizziness, cramps, headaches and nausea
What are peptide hormones
Increase rate of maturation of red blood cells
