How do we know who’s at risk? (3)

A

They must meet the criteria of the 3 point test;

Are unable to safeguard their own well being, property and right to other interests. - this can be an adult who doesn’t have the skills, means or an adult who does have the skills etc but choses not to

Are at risk of harm

are affected by disability, mental disorder, illness or physical/mental infirmity and are more vulnerable

What are the 10 principles of adult protection?

A

intervention must benefit

the intervention must be the least restrictive option

the intervention must take into account the adults wishes

the intervention must take into account the nearest relative, attorney, carers wishes

the intervention must take into account anyone who has interest in the adults wishes

the intervention must encourage participation from the adult

the intervention must ensure the adult is not treated less favourably

the intervention must take into account the adults abilities, background and characteristics

The adult must be given info and support to allow them to participate

What do we do if we think an adult is at risk?

A

the 3 R’s

Recognise

Record in the notes what you have recognised and the steps you are taking

Report to your line manager who will alert the the local authorities/council officer

  • The adult doesn’t need to lack capacity
  • the consent of the adult is not required but its best to inform them of what you’re doing

What information should be gathered when making a report? (4)

A

Patient details:
Name, Address, DOB, Gender, accommodation, family circumstances, physical and mental health status

Staff member who recognised and reason for involvement

Details of the abuse:
nature of the allegation, details regarding the perpetrator and the incidents/injuries

details of caregivers
