What does a “doctoral degree in psychology” mean?

A

1) a degree from an APA or CPA accredited program or from a program listed as a “designated doctoral program in psychology” in a document published by the Council for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology (CNRHSPP)
2) a doctoral degree that the CNRHSPP determines meets its criteria for a doctoral degree program in psychology, if the degree was received from a program that: 1) is located outside the US or Canada; 2) is accredited now, but was not at the time the degree was awarded; 3) was completed prior to 1981 in the US or 4) prior to 1988 in Canada; 5) is no longer in existence.

What does “practice psychology” mean? 3 things + 2 notes

A

To provide to any person any service for compensation involving the application of psychological:
1) APPLY LEARNING: principles, methods, or procedures for understanding, predicting, or influencing behavior, including the principles that relate to learning, perception, motivation, emotions, organizational relationships, and interpersonal relationships.
2) TOOLS for PRACTICE: methods or procedures for interviewing, counseling, psychotherapy, behavior modification, or hypnosis.
3) TESTING: methods or procedures for constructing, administering, or interpreting tests of mental abilities, neuropsychological functioning, aptitudes, personality characteristics, emotions, or motivations.
NOTE 1: this section does not limit those licensed in other professions (e.g., social worker) from doing “psychological” things (e.g., interviewing) that they are licensed to do under their licensure law.
NOTE 2: any service for compensation involving the application of psychological methods or procedures in a clinical situation (not research or teaching) falls under this law. Thus, doing these things as a volunteer would not violate this section of the law.

A

1) FIX PROBS: the application of psych principles and methods in the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and amelioration of psych problems, emotional conditions, or mental conditions of individuals or groups.
2) SELF-IMPROVEMENT: the use of psych methods to assist individuals in acquiring greater human effectiveness or to modify feelings, conditions, attitudes, or behavior that is emotionally, intellectually, or socially ineffectual or maladjusted.
3) BIOFEEDBACK: the use of biofeedback instruments that do not pierce or cut the skin to measure physical and mental functioning.
