Q

What does it mean to be licensed? Which title may you use when you are licensed? Which terms is it illegal to use until you are licensed (3)?

A

In MD, licensure is generic. The only title you may use is “licensed psychologist” (that is, it doesn’t matter whether you are a clinical, child clinical, or counseling psychologist). You will limit your scope of practice to those areas in which you are competent and qualified in based on your education, training, and supervised experience. It is illegal to use the terms “psychologist” “psychology” or “psychological” in any public statements until you are appropriately licensed.

What does licensure ensure?

A

To protect the State’s citizens from harm. The mission of the Board is to protect the welfare of the citizens of the State. Licensure ensures that those practicing psychology will have met the minimum standards for entering the profession. It does not guarantee competence or that harm will never occur.

Q

What are Titles 10 and 18?

A

Title 18 us an actual statute, or law. It states that the Board has the power to put into effect (promulgate) regulations to help implement these laws and to better carry out its duties. Title 10 contains those regulations. There may be some redundancy between Titles 10 and 18 for this reason.
