The hung parlliament

A
  • first ‘hung’ Parliament in the UK since February 1974.
  • David Cameron, the Conservatives were largest party - winning 306 seats but fell 20 seats short of a Parliamentary majority.
  • Five days after GE, Conservative-Lib Dem coalition was formed with Cameron becoming PM. First peacetime coalition government since the 1930s.

Why brown lost

A
  • 2010 GE followed 2008 financial crisis which took place when Brown was PM. Gave the Tories a means to attack his policies and leadership.
  • Brown was unpopular for not calling a GE when he took over as prime minister from Tony Blair in 2007.
  • Voters didnt clearly favour the Conservatives over Labour, with polls suggesting 29% of voters felt that the Conservatives would be best for managing the economy compared to 26% for Labour.
