20th Century
-The 20th Century saw huge developments to British society including:
1. Technological advancements such as TV and Radio
2. Improved working conditions- increased quality and quantity of leisure time
3. PE becoming available for all
4. Better Law and Order- society became safer
5. Unfortunate rise in terrorism
6. Growth of international sporting events
7. Public sporting facilities
Social Class
-There was less of a divide between classes but a gap was still clearly present
-Lower classes were now known as the working class
Gender
-Increased opportunities in sport for women
-Working class women were often excluded from professional sport, with only upper class women showing interest in sport
Education and Literacy
-Schools were divided into Grammar, Secondary, and Secondary technical schools
-Physical education was a key element of the 1944 Education Act
-1988 Butler’s Act- PE was added to the national curriculum
-Comprehensive schools were introduced
Travel
-Private and public transport e.g buses become more common and more affordable
-Aeroplanes became more common, especially for rich people
-More railways and cars
-Greater transport of goods to all across the world
Law and Order
-Sporting violence was rare and only really occurred in sports with violent natures such as rugby and boxing
Time
-Leisure time was increased for all of society
-People had more time to participate in and spectate sport
-Working class people still had to work long hours and had less free time compared to the larger free time upper classes had to play sport
Money
-Working classes had a higher dispensable income but they still made lower income compared to upper classes
-Money still had a large influence on participation and spectatorism
-Pub sports became more popular and were often gambled on
-Professional sports were on the rise in accordance with wages and prizes
