Characteristics of Mob Football
-Mob football was played by lower classes and peasants
-Mob football had little to no rules (no murder) and little to no equipment
-This made mob football a very violent and cruel sport
-Upper classes enjoyed wagering money on mob football
Characteristics of real tennis
-Real tennis was a complex and sophisticated sport that was played by the upper classes and aristocracy
-The equipment and facilities required were very expensive and the rules were complex and written so that lower classes could not understand how to play
Factors affecting participation in pre-industrial Britain (Social)
-The lower classes played mob football, cock fighting, and bare knuckle boxing
-These sports had simple rules and were very violent
The upper classes played sophisticated sports such as real tennis and fox hunting; these sports had complex rules and were less violent
-Both classes took part in pedestrianism and cricket; however, the lower classes often did the jobs that the upper class did not want to do (e.g fielding in cricket)
Gender
-Sport was male dominated
-Women took part in less physically demanding sports such as smock racing and archery
-Lower class women took part in smock racing while upper class women took part in archery
Transport
-Lower classes travelled on foot, but were often footmen for horse and carriages
-Upper classes travelled on horses or in carriages
-Sport often took place in villages due to poor modes of transport
Education and Literacy
-Lower classes were uneducated and therefore were only able to understand simple verbal instructions/rules
-Upper classes were educated so were able to read, write, and understand complex written rules
Law and Order
-Lower class sports were violent and cruel, this was due to a lack of law and order at the time
-Rules were localised
-There was no police force to enforce laws ( later introduced in 1829 by Robert Peel)
Time availability
-Lower classes worked all the time for long hours and little pay, and therefore had little time and energy for sport
-They only played took part in sport on national holidays
-However the upper classes had plenty of free time due to not having to work due to wealth
Money
-Lower classes had little to no dispensable income, as they were paid very little
-Whereas upper classes owned land and buildings, so were wealthy without having to work
