the formal interrelationships and hiearchal arrangements of HRM in a business

- con: hinders creativity/comm. problems/long chain of command

removing layers of hiearchy in an org. in order to flatten org. structure & increase span of control
pros: quicker communication/more empowerment for employees via delegation
cons: anxiety in workers who are scared to lose their job/more workload
