WMDs (Exam 2) Flashcards
Identify the Physical Characteristics and Physiological Effects of Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Agents or Materials
Chemical Agents
Biological Agents
Identify the Threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)
What is a WMD?
*any weapon that is designed or intended to cause death or serious bodily injury through the release dissemination or impact of toxic or poisonous chemicals or their precursors; any weapon involving a biological agent, toxin or vector; or any weapon that is designed to release radiation or radioactivity at a level dangerous to human life
What is a Chemical Weapon
device uses: Toxic chemical substance Effects through skin eyes or inhalation Results in death or incapacitation ex. Choking Agents: Chlorine gas Phosgene Blistering Agents: Effects similar to OC spray Mustard Gas Lewisite (will penetrate PPE) Blood Agents: Absorbed by inhalation Quick damage to tissues and organs Nerve Agents: Chemical agent that disrupts how the central nervous system speaks to your organs
Biological Agents
weapon that uses living organisms or materials that come from them as a weapon for the purpose of death or incapacitation
- Requires small quantities
- Has delayed effects
- Cheap
Disadvantages
*may be easily treatable
Types of Biological Weapons
Bacteria (anthrax) Viruses (Variola major "smallpox") Toxins (Ricin) Vectors (Bubonic Plague) Bacteria: Microorganisms that reproduce outside living cells
Identify how a Law Enforcement Officer can Survive an encounter involving a WMD agent
Look for: sudden mist or Vapor cloud leaking containers dead wildlife canines/children having uncontrollable seizures/defecation
To survive a WMD attack: know wind direction know the hot zone- Don't get closer then 100m (330ft) "uphill, upwind upstream" Don't touch anything/cover up
Undress from inside out Rinse off with cold water if possible get out of area turn off hvac seal off room
