When groups of people live apart from the larger population due to factors such as wealth, ethnicity, religion or age.

- Greater range of employment opportunities
- First point of entry for migrants - airport/ port
- Established ethnic/ migrant communities
- Established shops/ place of worship
- More respectful/ tolerant of newcomers
