3.2 Theory of Planned Behaviour Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is the theory of reasoned action?
- attitude
- intentions: decisions that drive behaviour
- behaviour (outcome)
What is behavioural intention?
- captures strength and motivational factors that influence behaviour
What other factor influences our intention?
subjective norm
- what others think you should do
What is subjective norm?
- what important others think about you performing the behaviour
What is the difference between subjective and descriptive norms?
subjective = what others think
descriptive = what others actually do
What are the two components of subjective norms?
- beliefs about whether important others approve/disapprove you performing the behaviour
- motivation to comply
What support is there for the theory of reasoned action?
Sheppard, Hartwick & Warshaw
- meta analysis
- support for the theory
- attitude plays a crucial role in predicting behaviour
What is an issue with the theory of reasoned action?
- makes assumptions that people always have control over their actions
What does the updated theory of planned behaviour account for? (Ajzen)
- perceived control
What is perceived behavioural control?
- peoples perceptions of their ability to perform a given behaviour
- similar to self-efficacy
What is the intention behaviour gap?
- intentions do not always translate to behaviour
What is a moderator variable?
- variable that influences the strength of the relationship between two variables
What is the sufficiency assumption for the TPB?
- the influence of other variables should be fully mediated by the specified social-cognitive variables
- are there additional variables that predict intentions and behaviour?
What is a critique of the TPB?
- is the account too rational?
- do people actually engage in such a complex decision-making task
- prediction is not always the same as explanation
What support did Armitage and Conner show for the TPB?
- meta analysis
- attitude, subjective norm and perceived control all correlate to intention
- intention then correlates to behaviour
What evidence did Webb and Sheeran show that PBC moderates the relationship between intention and behaviour?
- high perceived behavioural control has a higher correlation with behaviour than low PBC
What evidence did Armitage and Conner show that PBC moderates the relationship between intention and behaviour?
- perceived control has a medium-large correlation with behaviour
What did Sniehotta’s experimental test of the TPB find?
- the Theory of Planned Behavior is insufficient on its own to explain complex health behaviors like exercise adherence
