3.3 Memory Flashcards
(14 cards)
What does Mmory involve?
encoding, storage and
retrieval of information.
When information enters where does it go thorough?
Sensory Memory
Short term memory
Long term memory
What is Sensory memory
retains all the visual and
auditory input received for a few seconds.
What are encoded into the STM
Only selected images and sounds are
encoded into short-term memory.
Describe STM
has a limited capacity and holds
information for a short time.
How is the capacity of the STM be improved
By chunking
What is the serial position effect?
Remembering the first and last items in a list better than items in the middle.
How is information lost?
By Decay and Displacement
Explain Working memory
STM can also process data, to a limited
extent, as well as store it. This ‘working memory model’ explains why the STM can perform simple cognitive tasks.
Describe LTM
LTM has an unlimited capacity and holds
information for a long time.
How is information transferred betwen STM and LTM
by rehearsal, organisation and elaboration.
What is Rehearsal?
Rehearsal is regarded as a shallow form of
encoding information into LTM.
What is Elaboration
Elaboration is regarded as a deeper form of encoding which leads to improved information retention.
What is a contexual clue?
Contextual cues relate to the time and place
when the information was initially encoded
into LTM.
