3.4 Cells of the nervous system and neurotransmitters at synapses Flashcards
(9 cards)
Describe the function of a Cell body
Contains the nucleus and Cytoplasm
Describe the function of a Dendrite
Nerve fibres that recieve nerve impulses and pass them towards a cell body.
Describe the Axons function
Single fibre that carries nerve impulses away from a cell body.
Why is the axon insulated?
increases the
speed of impulse conduction. and for Protection.
What is sourrounding the axon
Myelin sheath
When does Myelination start?
From birth to adolescence
What is co ordination like with myelination?
Responses to stimuli in the first two years of
life are not as rapid or co-ordinated as those
of an older child or adult.
What do Glial cells do?
Produce Myelin sheath and support neurons
What can cause a loss if co ordination.
Certain diseases destroy the myelin sheath
causing a loss of co-ordination.
