3.5 Non specific Body Defences Flashcards
(10 cards)
Name two physical barriers
Epithelial cells
Chemical secretions
Where are Epithelial cells found?
in the skin and inner linings of the digestive and respiratory systems.
What are produced agaisnt invading pathogens?
Chemical secretions
What do secretions include?
tears, saliva, mucus and stomach acid.
What is a pathogen?
a bacterium, virus or other organism that can cause disease.
Describe the 3 stages of the Imflammatory response.
- After injury Mast cells become activated and release histamine.
- Histamine causes blood vessels to Vasodilate and increased permeability.
- The increased blood flow leads to an accumulation of phagocytes and clotting elements at the site of infection.
What are Cytokines?
are protein molecules that act as a signal to specific white blood cells causing them to accumulate at the site of infection.
What do Phagocytes release?
Cytokines
Describe Phagocytosis
Engulfs and destroys pathogens by digestive enzymes contained in lysosomes.
