3.7 Immunisation Flashcards
(9 cards)
How is immunity developed?
by vaccination using antigens from infectious pathogens, so creating memory cells.
What 4 things can the antigens in vaccines be
Inactivated Pathogen
Dead pathogen
Parts of a pathogen
Weakend pathogen
What are antigens mixed with
an adjuvant
What is an Adjuvant?
a substance which makes the
vaccine more effective, so enhancing the
immune response.
What is Herd immunity.
when a large
percentage of a population is immunised.
Why is herd immunity important?
Non-immune individuals are protected as
there is a lower probability they will come into
contact with infected individuals.
What does the Herd immunity threshold depend on?
- Type of Disease
- Effectiveness of Vaccine
- Densiy of Population
What is Antigenic Variation?
Some pathogens can change their antigens.
This means that memory cells are not
effective against them.
