Parathyroid Disorders Flashcards
1
Q
- Causes: thyroidectomy, irraditation, autoimmune, Mg deficiency
- Tetany, carpopedal spasms, cramps, psych changes
- Chvostek/trousseau; decreased PTH & Ca; increased P
- Vit. D; Teriparatide (PTH)
A
Hypoparathyroid
2
Q
- primary: adenoma; secondary: CKD
- Often asmptomatic;
- Bones, stones, abd groans, psych moans and fatgiue
- Renal stones, polyuria, HTN, constipation,
- Increased PTH & Ca
- Bisphosphonates; parathyoidectomy
A
Hyperparathyroidism
3
Q
- Congential Disorders characterized by resistance to PTH
- (Same as hypoparathyroid) tetany, carpopedal spasms
- -Chvostek/trousseau; decreased PTH & Ca; increased P
- Ca
A
Pseudohyperparathyroidism
4
Q
- Hyperparathyroid most common etiology
- Most asymptomatic (symptoms when Ca >12)
- GI, Kideny, neuro functions affected. Constipation and polyuria
- Ca high,
- Fluids, get em peeing
A
Hypercalcemia
5
Q
- Often mistaken for neuro disorder (results in increased excitation of nerve and muscle cells)
- Most common cause=CKD; HypoPTH
- Muscle spasms and cramps, convulsions, parathesias,
- Low Ca; check PTH, Vit. D, Chvostek, trousseau
- Severe: Ca gluconate; Ca infusion; Mild: Oral Ca
A
Hypocalcemia
