3.7 Mary as a model of the Church Flashcards

Q

Why is Mary an important figure for the church

A

She is seen as important for Catholics because she is joined with Christ: All of her religious significance comes from the role she plays in the life of Christ (Immaculate conception, Virgin Birth, assumption and Mother of the Church). Despite these roles being part of God’s plan she still had to accept them (free will). This connection allows her to intercede for Catholics.
She is a role model as she was the first disciple, she was the first one to believe in Christ, from the annunciation.
She is a model of faith and charity; she accepted her role, she continued to trust in God at the foot of the cross, she gave her only son for mankind, wedding at Canaan •Implications of these beliefs today; Marian shrines, statues, side altars, rosary, hymns, dedicated feast days, religious orders in her name
NB. Other Christians see Mary as important but do not see her as having a more privileged place in Christianity
