3A- Genetics Flashcards
(33 cards)
What are genes?
Units of heredity that are made up of DNA
Define inheritance/heredity
The passing of traits from parents to offspring
What are traits?
Characteristics that are inherited from parents
What are alleles?
Different forms of a gene
Define genotype
The genetic makeup of an organism
Define phenotype
The observable characteristics of an organism
What does homozygous mean?
Having two identical alleles for a particular gene
What does heterozygous mean?
Having two different alleles for a particular gene
Define dominant allele
An allele that expresses its trait even in the presence of a recessive allele
Define recessive allele
An allele that only expresses its trait when two copies are present
What are Mendel’s Laws?
Three principles: Law of Segregation, Law of Independent Assortment, and Law of Dominance
What does true breeding mean?
Organisms that produce offspring identical to themselves when self-fertilized
What does cross breeding refer to?
Mating of two different true-breeding varieties
What are the P, F1, and F2 generations?
P is the parental generation, F1 is the first filial generation, F2 is the second filial generation
What is a monohybrid cross?
A cross between individuals that differ in one trait
What do Punnett Squares help determine?
Genotype and phenotype ratios of offspring
What is a dihybrid cross?
A cross between individuals that differ in two traits
What is incomplete dominance?
A form of inheritance where the phenotype is a blend of the two parents’ traits
What is codominance?
A form of inheritance where both alleles are fully expressed in the phenotype
What are multiple alleles?
More than two alleles exist for a given gene in a population
Define polygenic traits
Traits controlled by two or more genes
What is the significance of blood type in heredity?
Blood type is determined by multiple alleles and can follow specific inheritance patterns
What is the overall function of meiosis?
To produce gametes with half the number of chromosomes
What is the difference between diploid and haploid?
Diploid cells have two sets of chromosomes, haploid cells have one set
