Cephalic Phase

A

Begins with presentation and ingestion of a meal. Salivation stimulated via cholinergic reflexes mediated by parasympathetic nerves. Stimulates primary peristalsis in the esophagus and cause relaxation of the UES and LES. Also stimulates the secretion of acid in the stomach.

Gastric Phase

A

Phase begins when food enters the stomach. Distension of the stomach activates stretch receptors initiating a number of reflexes which alter gastric, intestinal, colonic and pancreatic activities. This also stimulates acid secretion.

Intestinal Phase

A

Begins when the chyme enters the small intestine. Distension stimulates intestinal contractile activity. This stimulates exocrine pancreatic secretion which facilitates fat, protein digestion, and CHO digestion.

Interdigestive Phase

A

Period between the endo f one digestive phase and the beginning of another. The activity in the GI tract is at a low level during this period and there is a minimal release of GI hormones or exocrine secretion. Smooth muscle contraction is involved.
