4.6.1 - Forces and Energy Flashcards
(49 cards)
What is a scalar quantity?
A quantity that has magnitude (size) only
Give an example of scalar quantity.
- Distance
- Speed
What is a vector quantity?
A quantity that has magnitude (size) and direction
Give an example of a vector quantity.
- Forces
What is a force?
A push, pull or twist. Can be a contact or a non-contact force
How are forces shown?
Arrows
What is a contact force?
Force exerted between two objects while touching
Name a example of a contact force.
- Friction
- Air Resistance
- Tension
What is a non-contact force?
A force that affects an object without coming into contact with it
Name an example of a non-contact force.
- Gravitational Forces
- Electrostatic Forces
- Magnetic Forces
How can you measure a force?
With a Newton metre
What are the units for force?
Newtons (N)
What is a resultant force?
The overall acting on an object
How is resultant force calculation?
Subtraction of the opposite forces
What is a free body diagram?
A simplified drawing showing the forces acting on an object
What are balanced forces?
Equal sized forces in opposite directions
What effects do balanced forces have on a stationary object?
Doesn’t move it.
What effects do balanced forces have on a moving object?
It stays at a constant speed
What are unbalanced forces?
Forces of unequal size acting in opposite directions
What effect do unbalanced forces have?
Moves it in the direction of the largest force
What is work done?
Energy transferred by a force
How is work done calculation?
Work Done = Force x Distance
What is the relationship between 1 joule and 1 newton-metre?
They are the same
Define mass
Amount of particles that make up an object
