- his dedication caused him to be poor, but he became an established success and could afford to buy the things he needed
- most of his work was outdoors/nature
- style consisted of applying to the canvas small dabs of pigment corresponding to is immediate visual observations
- in the 1880s he changed his specks of paint into brushstrokes
- in 1900-26 he eliminated outlines and contours until form and line almost disappeared in interwoven brushstrokes
