Q

Explain the stages of the life cycle of a keratinocyte

A

The basal cell (cuboidal) moves up through the different stages and different genes are turned on and off during this.

It then becomes a spinous cell and starts to synthesise keratin. Interdigitation of the cell membrane helps with fitting more desmosomes and resist the shearing forces.

Then it becomes a granular cell - full of keratohyaline granules. Also makes lipids and stores these for the water barrier. Golgi making lipids and the lipids are released on surface of cell. The lipids make an impermeable barrier.
