Chemistry- Green Book- Potentially Hazardous Chemicals Flashcards
Chemical agents that have the power to change dead tissue aso have the potential to change iving human tissue of anyone who comes into contact of those agents. This term implies being put at risk, danger or peril.
Hazardous
A substance which, when introduced into a living organism, interferes with the normal physiological functions of that organism.
- Embalming chemical agent can act as this if it is introduced into a living organism.
- If living organism is an agent of infectious disease or is a contributor to putrefaction/decay of the body it can be advatageous, but the embalmer handling the body is put at risk.
Poison
- Inorganic in nature
- Organic in nature
Two Basic Varieties of Poisons
Composed of elements and compounds derived from inanimate sources.
- Mercury
- Arsenic
- Lead
Inorganic Poisons
A poisonous substance of plant or animal origin.
Organic Poisons (Toxins)
The amount of poison to which human beings are exposed.
Dose
That amount of poison which will cause death to the organism to which it is administered.
Lethal Dose
A lethal dose which kills fifty percent of the organisms which receive the dose.
LD-50
The minimal amount of poison which will kill all the organisms which receive the dose.
Minimum Lethal Dose (MLD)
These have designated many of the chemicals used in the mortuary as Hazardous Chemicals.
OSHA, Statutes of the EPA
A colorless, volatile liquid derived by the oxidation of secondary propanol. It is used primarily as a solvent in embalming fluids.
- Flammable and moderately toxic
- Tolerance is placed at 1,000ppm in the air
Acetone
Colorless liquids that are produced by the oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons. Used as a solvent vehicle in embalming fluids.
- Flammable
- Methanol is the most toxic- can cause blindness if ingested.
Alcohol
A dark red-brown powder used as an internal cosmetic dye in embalming fluids.
- Considered toxic if ingested in sufficient quantity
Amaranth
A white crystal solid substance used as a herbicide.
- Considered to be a carcinogen to humans
Amitrole
A colorless gas with a pungent odor which can be used as a solvent for other substances.
- Inhalation can cause edema of the respiratory tract.
Ammonia
