7.10 Springs Flashcards
What are springs used for
To store and to furnish energy, absorb shock or sustain pressure between two contacting surfaces
What are the 4 types of springs
-compression
-extension (tension)
-Torision
-wireform
What is the usual corrective/repaid action for springs found to be unserviceable
Replaced
What law of physics does the behaviour of springs follow and what does it state
Hookes law
The force is proportional to extension and as long as this is true a spring will return to its original shape once any load has been removed
What do compression springs offer
Offer resistance to a compressive force applied axially
What do extension springs offer
Absorb and store energy by offering resistance to a pulling force
What is a name for a special type of extension spring and what does it look like
Draw bar spring - it has a solid stop and is a type of compression spring with special hooks
How does a torsion spring work
It exerts a force in a circular arc and the arms rotate about the central axis - the stress is in bending not torsion
What are wireform springs
Made from round wire that are bent to have a specific angles and length. Wire forms do not have helix or spiral shape coils
What are the most common types of material for wireform springs
Cold rolled steel
Stainless steel
What type of maintenance do spring require
Vert little.
The springs can corrode over time or if exposed to high temperatures can lose their temper and cease so would therefore have to be replaced.
What is a static extension measurement test
The manufacture publishes the exact dimensions of the unloaded spring with tolerance and the engineer measures the spring length and if it is within tolerance then the spring is serviceable
What would you measure a spring with
Vernier callipers or micrometer
When would you do spring testing
Opportunity basis or some checks are prescribed basis
