9.1/.2 - Metabolism & Nutrients Flashcards
(10 cards)
Metabolism
All of the chemical reactions occuring in your body
Catabolism & anabolism
Catabolism - metabolic reactions that break down molecules
Anabolism - reactions that build larger molecules
Metabolic rate
Rate at which body converts stored energy into working energy
Basal metabolic rate (BMR)
Metabolic rate at rest
Nutrients
Chemicals that organisms need to grow, build/repair tissues, & produce energy
Carbohydrates (what they do and sources of them)
Primary source of energy
Found in fruits, veggies, & grains
Protein (what they do, primary structure, and sources of them)
Builds muscle tissue, hemoglobin in red blood cells help carry oxygen, as enzymes, hormones, transport function, etc… has lots of functions.
Primary structure is a chain of amino acids. [Essential amino acid - You can’t make them and have to consume them. There are 20 total amino acids and 8 are essential]
Found in meats & nuts
Lipids (fats) (what they do and sources of them)
Major energy-storing molecule
Found in nuts, avocado, and processed foods
Water (what they do and sources of them)
Needed for cell cytoplasm, chemical reactions, to digest food & eliminate waste
Vitamins & minerals (what they do and sources of them)
Vitamins - can be fat-soluble (dissolve in fat. ex. vitamins A, D, E, K) or water soluble (dissolve in water, like Vitamin C), regulates cell functions, growth, & developments within our bodies. Found in fruits & veggies
Minerals - calcium & phosphorus are important for bones; iron for blood. Found in dairy.
