what are norms?
specific rules or expectations in a society about what is socially acceptable behaviour
what are norms dependent upon?
social context
examples of social context?
location, time of day, specific culture
what are norms dependent on?
age, gender, ethnicity and other social factors
example of norms?
adhere to dress code- school,m work, sleeping. age- playing in a park, older would be abnormal
what are moral codes?
code of ethics with the expectation that you will follow ten and adhere to them
what are moral codes dependent upon?
social institutions

what sanctions are there for being deviant?
formal and informal
examples of moral codes?
doctors and nurses- patient confidentiality,. teachers expected to be professional. police expected to treat everyone equally.
what at values?
what people in society believe is the right thing to do in a given social context
can values change?
yes, they are general guidelines about how we should live our lives
examples of values?
society is fair and meritocratic- people who irk hard will be rewarded. children are innocent has should be protected from the adult world. all citizens are equal and should be treated with respect no matter who they are
what is deviant behaviour?
acts that goes against the norms of society
does all deviant behaviour break the law?
no
three types of deviant behaviour?
odd, admired, bad.
what is admired deviance?
behaviour that goes again the norms and values of society but is seen as heroic
examples of admired deviance?
firefighters risking to save lives during collapse of twin towers, rosa parks refusal to get out of her set for white passengers, challenging segregation.
what is odd deviance?
eccentric behaviour that many people would not take part in, or behaviour that challenging norms and values of how people do things
example of odd deviance?
men wearing makeup to challenge norms, vivienne westwood and punk rock style.
what is bad deviance?
aligned with criminal behaviour, refers to deviant acts that are perceived as undesirable by majority of society
what does the perception of bad deviance rely on?
social situation and era
evaluations of deviant behaviour?
not always negative, many social changes have come from deviation, deviation is a social construction
what examples began as deviant behaviour?
challenging racism, sexism, homophobia
