Use of deterrence to deter society in general from committing crime. When there is an increased chance of being caught or there is a greater punishment evolved the higher the general deterrence and vice versa e.g. mandatory minimum e.g. life for murder or USA 3 strike policy
What are the control theories for control
1.Walter C Reckless
2. Travis Hirschi
What is reckless’ theory
The theory of containment and that you resist crimes due to inner and outer containment
Inner containment->Comes from your upbringing your family
Outer->Social groups e.g. Laws of society
A combo of these prevent people from committing crimes->you need both
What is Hirschi’s theory
People must form social bonds to prevent criminal behaviour and there are 4 bonds
1.Attachment->Positive attachments to parents, school.
2.Commitment->Positive commitment to accomplishing future goals e.g. nice house etc
3.Involvement-> sports or community group
4.Belief->in societies values
These must all be formed to prevent the tendency to commit a crime
