Aerobic and Anaerobic Exercise Flashcards
(14 cards)
what is aerobic respiration
where the body uses oxygen to release energy from glucose
what is the formula for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
what is aerobic exercise
exercise that is steady so that the heart can supply all the oxygen that the working muscles need
what happens if there is enough oxygen for aerobic respiration
your body is keeping up with the oxygen demand of its cells
what do you breathe out during aerobic exercise
carbon dioxide through your lungs
how is water lost during aerobic exercise
through sweat, urine or in the air breathed out
how do marathon runners produce energy whilst exercising for long periods
aerobically since your muscles are supplied with enough oxygen
what is anaerobic respiration
when your body can’t supply the oxygen needed during vigorous exercise so your muscles release energy without oxygen
what is the formula for anaerobic respiration
glucose -> lactic acid + energy
what is anaerobic exercise
exercise that is short at a high intensity where the heart and lungs can’t supply blood and oxygen to muscles as fast as the cells need them
what does a lack of oxygen during anaerobic exercise mean
energy can only be provided for a short period of time so sprinters get their energy anaerobically as they have to run quickly for short durations
why does your body need fuel
so that respiration can provide energy
what are carbohydrates
the body’s main source of fuel for moderate intensity aerobic exercise and high intensity anaerobic exercise
what are fats
a fuel for low intensity aerobic exercise which provide more energy than carbohydrates but can’t be used as fuel for high intensity exercise
