Muscular System 1 Flashcards
(21 cards)
what is the function of the biceps
flexion at the elbow when doing a bicep curl
what is the function of the triceps
extension at the elbow during a jump shot in basketball
what is the function of the hamstrings
flexion at the knee when bringing the foot back before kicking a football
what is the function of the quadriceps
extension at the knee whenperforming a drop kick in rugby
what is the function of the pectorals
adduction and flexion at the shoulder during a forehand in tennis
what is the function of the abdominals
flexion at the waist during a sit-up
what is the function of the gastrocnemius
plantar flexion at the ankle when standing on the toes in a ballet pointe
what is the function of the tibialis anterior
dorsiflexion at the ankle during a heel side turn in snowboarding
what is the function of the hip flexors
flexion of the leg at the hip when lifting the knee during sprinting
what is the function of the gluteals
extension, rotation and abduction of the leg at the hip when pushing the body forward during running
what is the function of the deltoid
flexion, extension, abduction or circumduction at the shoulder during a front crawl in swimming
what is the function of the latissimus dorsi
extension, adduction, or rotation at the shoulder during a butterfly stroke in swimming
what is the function of the rotator cuffs
rotation and abduction at the shoulder when lifting the arms when preparing to dive
what do the rotator cuffs stabilise
the shoulder joint during other movements
what happens when a muscle contracts
it creates tension to apply force to a bone
what is an isometric contraction
where the muscle stays the same length such as pulling on a rope attached to a wall
what is an isotonic contraction
where the muscle changes length so something moves such as exercising with free weights
what is concentric contraction
when a muscle contracts and shortens whilst pulling on a bone to cause a movement
what is eccentric contraction
when a muscle contracts and lengthens to help control the speed of a movement
give an example of concentric contraction
during the upward phase of a bicep curl your biceps undergo a concentric contraction to pull your forearm and lift the weight
give an example of eccentric contraction
during the downward phase of a bicep curl your biceps contract eccentrically creating tension so that the weight falls slowly
