Skeletal System 4 Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is the function of tendons
they attach muscles to bones to allow bones to move when muscles contract
what is the function of cartilage
it acts as a cushion between bones to prevent damage during joint movement whilst aiding the stability of a joint
what is the function of ligaments
they join bones to bones to restrict how much joints can move
what does ligaments holding bones together help with
the stability of the skeleton and preventing joint dislocation
what are ligaments made of
tough and fibrous tissues to absorb shock
what is a synovial joint
a joint that allows a wide range of movement
what are examples of a synovial joints
a ball and socket joint and a hinge joint
what is the function of a joint capsule
to enclose and support the synovial joint
what do ligaments hold together
the bones at a synovial joint
why are the bones covered with cartilage and shaped
so they fit together and move smoothly
what does the synovial membrane release
synovial fluid into the joint capsule which lubricates the joint to allow it to move more easily
what are bursae
sacs of fluid which reduce friction between bones and tissues around the joint
how does this structure help athletes
they prevent injury to the bones that make up your joints
