Aerobic Exercise Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the definition of aerobic exercise?
Repetitive, structured physical activity that requires the body to use oxygen to produce energy through aerobic metabolism.
What are some examples of aerobic exercises?
Walking, cycling, jogging, and dancing.
List the components of the FITT principle for aerobic exercise.
Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type.
What is Low Intensity Steady State (LISS) training?
Sustained low-intensity aerobic activity such as jogging at a comfortable pace.
What is Fartlek training?
Training with varying intensity and pace, such as alternating between sprinting and jogging.
At what intensity should aerobic exercise be performed to be effective?
Approximately 60–80% of VO2MAX.
What is the gold standard test for assessing aerobic fitness?
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET).
What are the differences between the walking and running Incremental Shuttle Tests?
Walking test: 10m track, starts at 3 km/h, used for older or chronic patients. Running test: 20m track, starts at 8.5 km/h, used for children and healthy adults.
Describe the Chester Step Test.
Patient steps on a 30cm step at increasing paces until reaching 80% max HR, RPE 15, or 10 mins of stepping is completed.
What is a MET and what does 1 MET equal?
A MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) is the oxygen consumed at rest, approximately 3.5 ml O2/kg/min.
