Ageing 10: Eyes, Ears, Nose & Throat Flashcards
(9 cards)
1
Q
Outline four common visual disorders in older adults
A
- Myopia (near-sightedness)
- Hyperopia (far-sightedness)
- Astigmatism (eye focuses on multiple points in the retina)
- Presbyopia (inflexible lens can’t focus light well)
2
Q
Briefly: how does cataracts occur?
A
Clouding of the lens of the eye.
3
Q
Cataracts prevention strategies
A
- Prevent diabetes
- Protect eyes from UV (e.g. sunglasses) and trauma (e.g. safety goggles when welding/cutting)
- Quit smoking (↓ microvascular damage)
4
Q
Describe age-related macular degeneration + forms
A
- Drusen (extracellular deposits) under retina of eye
- Can be dry (thinning of macula) or wet (exudative; abnormal neovascularisation in the macula)
5
Q
Risk factors for age related macular degeneration
A
- Smoking/htnm
- Age
- Hyperopia (WIT?)
- Drusen
- FHx
6
Q
Treatment of dry AMD
A
- Vitamin supplements
- Amsler grid to check vision over time
- Manage risk factors (htn/↑ cholesterol/obesity)
- Monitoring for driving safety etc
7
Q
Treatment of wet AMD
A
- Injections of anti-VEGF MAbs
8
Q
What is glaucoma + subtypes w/ corresponding timescale
A
- Glaucoma is a family of diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve due to ↑ IOP from aqueous humour buildup
- Open angle glaucoma (less acute) impaired humour drainage
- Closed angle (very acute) sudden blockage of trabecular meshwork (WIT?)
9
Q
Glaucoma risk factors
A
- Age
- Myopia
- FHx
- Thin cornea
