Alignment and Adjustments Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is camber?
Inward or outward tilt of the top of the wheel
What is setback?
One wheel set back further than the other
What is caster?
Forward or backward tilt of the upper ball joint, or top of the strut
What is thrust angle?
The direction the rear wheels are positioned in reference to the centerline
What does S.A.I stand for?
Steering axis inclination
What is toe?
The difference between leading edge and trailing edges of the front wheel
What is S.A.I?
The angle between the true center line of the tire and the center line of the strut or upper ball joint
What does I.A stand for?
Included angle
What is I.A?
S.A.I angle plus actual camber
What are the three types of alignment?
- Two wheel alignment
- Two wheel thrust angle
- Four wheel
What is the purpose of S.A.I and I.A?
- Directional control stability
- Vehicle load placement
- Steering wheel returnability
What is the most neglected part of wheel alignment?
Tires
What is the second most neglected part of wheel alignment?
Ride height
What does SAS stand for?
Steering Angle Sensor
What does a SAS do?
Measures the angle and angle velocity of the vehicle steering column, or driver intent steering angle
In regards to alignment, what are the two functions of a spring?
- Hold the vehicle at a certain height above the ground
- Distribute the weight of the vehicle to the different wheels during turns, braking, and acceleration
