Suspension Types Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the three main configurations of vehicle suspensions?
- Solid (non-independent)
- Semi-independent
- Independent
What does solid suspension do?
Moves both wheels across axle & frame as one wheel goes over a bump
What does semi-independent suspension do?
Moves one wheel across axle as it goes over a bump using a single physical beam
What does independent suspension do?
Moves one wheel totally independent of the other as it goes over a bump. There is NO physical connection between each wheel on this axle.
What are the major components of a Twin I-Beam Front Suspension system?
- Coil spring
- Knuckle
- I-Beam axle
- Kingpin
What does a strut system consist of?
- Lower control arm
- Ball joint
- Steering knuckle
- Strut assembly
- Coil spring
How is a MacPherson strut identified?
By the upper mounting of the steering knuckle
What are the two types of ball joints?
- Load carrying
- Followers (friction-loaded)
What are two other names for load-carrying joints?
- Tension loaded ball joints
- Compression loaded ball joints
Where is a load carrying ball joint normally located?
In the control arm that normally holds or seats the spring
How do you identify SLA 1 Type Suspension?
- Spring rests on lower control arm
- Upper ball joint is a friction or follower type
How do you identify SLA 2 Type Suspension?
- Spring rests on the upper control arm
- Lower ball joint is a friction or follower type
What are the three common kinds of rear independent suspension?
- Trailing arm type
- MacPherson strut type
- Multi-Link strut type
What is the most common form of front independent suspension?
Multi-Link type
